The New Webmaster values transparency. So here's a few tricks of the trade to look out for when shopping around for website hosting.
Check that the "low low" price that you are being quoted for your new website hosting includes everything. Some companies offer a low price for the basic package but then charge for extra e-mail accounts or charge administration fees if you wish to add a new e-mail address or insist on checking any scripts you upload to the server and then charge a fee for doing so. Also, make sure that the low price you are being quoted is for servers located in South Africa. As we have noted elsewhere, webspace and bandwidth are very cheap in the United States and, even taking exchange rates into account, its much cheaper to host your site on an international server.
We do offer an international website hosting option but we make no bones about its speed. Its slower for sure because of the distance but if you insist and are on a budget we'll set it up for you.
Some hosting companies load so many sites onto their servers that although they are locally hosted, the site is still slow and unresponsive, especially at peak hours. The high traffic volume resulting from hundreds of sites being located on a single server means that the computer hosting the sites runs more slowly.
We don't do this.
Check to see if your website host also supplies internet access. Watch out for this. This means that the server's main job is not delivering your web page to your visitor's browser. It is also busy authenticating dial up users and making sure that they get to see the web pages they are browsing.
We don't do this either
Support is an issue too. Sure you want support that is friendly, efficient and prompt and everyone promises this but will your support desk extend this function to other aspects of your website. Will they help you with setting up scripts or with a troublesome piece of code. In short, are they willing to go the extra mile for you without asking for more cash every time they do it.
For sure we do this.
Some hosts offer free domain registration or offer a reduced rate with none of the other drawbacks outlined above. Check if they are asking for a contract. If so what are the terms and duration of this contract. What happens if you want to exit early? You may find that sites like this, register your domain for you but if you decide to terminate your hosting with them, charge you a hefty administration fee to release your domain to your new host.
We don't do this. No contracts and a money back guarantee.
One last hint - don't compromise on the price. If its cheap, there definitely is a catch.
